What is llms.txt and why does it matter?
The new standard
llms.txt is a simple Markdown file you put at the root of your domain (like robots.txt) that tells AI engines what your site is about and which pages matter most. It's a 2024-2025 standard already adopted by Anthropic, Mistral, and many others.
Why it helps AEO
Without it, AI engines guess at your site structure from your sitemap and homepage. With it, you tell them exactly where the important content is — making it dramatically more likely they cite your pages instead of competitors'.
The format
# Site Name(one H1 at the top)> Short description(one blockquote)## Section Nameheaders- [Link text](URL): optional descriptionbullet links
Be early
Adoption is still growing. Sites that publish llms.txt now get an easy AEO advantage — competitors haven't caught on yet. The cost is one file at the root of your site.
